The proven approach takes the construction industry to the next step in safer working and beyond the performance achievable from effective process design and measurement.

What is the NGL Work Safe programme?

Central to the programme are the NGL Work Safe Discussions. They are designed to help influence attitude and shift behaviour on working safely. Each Discussion encourages staff to think about the choices they make and the positive action they can take to make a difference - for themselves and their colleagues.

Key to the approach is that managers and supervisors run the programme with their teams. Each Discussion takes about 20 minutes and requires the minimum of material. All the Discussions involve participants through an activity, making them easy-to-run and enjoyable for the manager to conduct.

The programme includes a short session of "trainer training" for supervisors and managers. This familiarises them with the standard format and process that the Discussions use.

In addition, there are materials to promote awareness of the programme and if required, options for its launch and on-going development.

The recommended frequency for the programme is to run an NGL Work Safe Discussion bi-monthly.

Generating behavioural change

NGL's Discussions are very different in design and style to both traditional toolbox talks and technical compliance and competence training.

The "magic" that generates behavioural change comes from involving people in an engaging and practical activity. A short discussion review gets participants to commit to do their bit and change to, or continue with, good behavioural safety practices. "Cues" are also included to help with the recall and use of this behaviour back on the job. A period of simple follow ups, using the supporting material and reminders provided, reinforces key messages and checks on progress.

By running a Discussion bi-monthly, awareness of the safer working culture is kept high and a "continuous conversation" on safety develops. An added benefit is that the programme also forms a solid platform for future workforce communication.
